water, isolation, rebirth.

So obviously Joanna Newsom is no news...something about her voice and harp has captured my imagination as of late. She has a depth to her voice and the lyrics to match. And that harp..I have always been mesmerized not only by the sound but by the fluidity with which one has to play that amazing instument. it is like a dance with strings and sound...Joanna - not only do I share my second name with her but it seems her sensitivities for the classical, romantic and even renaissance. The cover of her second album YS is a Renanissance Botticellesque like portrait filled with symbolism - the crow, the encased (dead) butterfly, the river and mountains, even the braid - magical! and the air of the Pre-Raphalite Romaticism. Love it!

On Ys... the main themes that emerge out of that myth are really close to the themes on the record-- mortality, decadence, an excess of water, isolation, rebirth.

Joanna Newsom born January 18, 1982 is an American harpist and singer-songwriter from Nevada City, California.
